How to Help a Nervous Child at the Dentist

A nervous child can still have a positive dental visit with the right preparation, language and support. Learn simple ways parents can help children feel calmer.

It is very common for children to feel nervous before a dental visit. Some children worry because they do not know what will happen, while others may have had a previous uncomfortable experience or simply feel unsure in a new environment.

The good news is that parents can do a lot to help children feel calmer before and during a dental appointment.

Why do children feel nervous at the dentist?

Children may feel nervous because of unfamiliar sounds, bright lights, new people, dental instruments, or fear that something will hurt. Younger children may also find it difficult to sit still or understand why the appointment is needed.

A calm, gentle approach can make a big difference, especially when dental visits become familiar and positive over time.

Use positive, simple language

Before the appointment, explain the visit in simple and positive words. You might say that the dentist will count their teeth, check their smile and help keep their teeth strong.

Try to avoid words that may increase fear, such as “needle”, “drill”, “pain” or “hurt”. Even if you are trying to reassure your child, these words can make them more worried.

Do not over-explain treatment

It is natural to want to prepare your child, but too much detail can make the appointment feel bigger and scarier than it needs to be.

For a check-up, keep the explanation short and calm. If treatment is needed, the dental team can explain the next steps in a child-friendly way.

Book at the right time of day

Children often cope better when they are not tired, hungry or rushed. For younger children, a morning or early afternoon appointment may be easier than a late-day visit.

Arriving a little early can also help your child settle before the appointment begins.

Bring comfort items if helpful

Some children feel calmer with a favourite soft toy, small comfort item, or parent nearby. Let the dental team know if your child has a particular fear or needs extra reassurance.

Stay calm yourself

Children often pick up on a parent’s tone, body language and facial expressions. If you stay calm and confident, your child is more likely to feel safe.

If you have your own dental anxiety, try not to share negative dental stories before your child’s appointment.

Start with regular check-ups

Regular check-ups can help children become familiar with the dental setting before any bigger problems develop. Positive early visits can build confidence and reduce fear over time.

Preventive visits can also help identify small issues before they become painful or urgent.

What if your child refuses to open their mouth?

This can happen, especially with younger or very nervous children. A gentle dentist will usually take things slowly, build trust, and avoid forcing the appointment beyond what the child can manage.

Sometimes the first visit is mainly about becoming familiar with the room, chair and dental team.

Can CDBS help with children’s dental visits?

Eligible children may be able to use the Child Dental Benefits Schedule for basic dental services, subject to eligibility and available CDBS balance.

If your child is not eligible for CDBS, ask us about our Kids Check & Clean offer from $79.
