What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root Canal Treatment is a procedure which helps to repair an infected or dead tooth which has been damaged due to decay, trauma or gum disease.

During root canal procedure we remove the infected or dead nerve inside the tooth which is causing pain or infection. Having a root canal treatment allows us to save a dead tooth which would have otherwise needed to be removed.

What happens if I leave an infected or dead tooth in my mouth?

  1. Pain: Infected teeth are often painful and leaving an infected tooth in your mouth can often lead to unbearable, radiating or throbbing pain.
  2. Swelling: Along with a dead tooth, there is associated infection. As this infection grows, it may result in a swelling of your gums or face.
  3. Damage to surrounding tissues: Leaving an infected tooth inside your mouth can result in the associated gums and bone becoming further infected which will result in an abscess, swelling and pain.

What are the signs that I need a Root Canal?

Root Canal Treatment is often required when decay or fracture of your tooth reaches the nerve. Once bacteria infects your nerve it may cause severe pain. Here are some signs to watch out for :
  • Severe pain in the affected tooth which may travel to the head, neck, ear or eyes
  • Sensitivity to extreme temperatures such as hot and cold with lingering pain lasting for more than a few seconds
  • Discolouration of a tooth
  • Swollen face or gums
  • Pain on applying pressure to the tooth during chewing
  • Waking up/not being able to sleep due to throbbing pains

What is the Root Canal Procedure?

A root canal treatment usually consists of 3 appointments spaced 1-2 weeks apart. This allows for a few days of draining to fully cleanse the canal and for medication to have its full effect.

It is important to remember that Root Canal Treatment is PAIN FREE. During all appointments, local anaesthesia will be given to ensure you have a comfortable and pleasant experience.

What happens after Root Canal Treatment?

What to Expect During a Root Canal Treatment in Lara?

  1. Comprehensive examination/ X-ray: If your Lara dentist diagnoses that you may need a root canal, x-rays will be taken or existing x-rays will be examined to see where the decay and infection is located.
  2. Anaesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered to the affected tooth. We want to stress that this process is PAIN FREE.
  3. Pulpectomy: A small opening is made through the infected tooth and the infected pulp and nerve is removed. This will stop both infection, pain and swelling.
  4. Shaping: The canals within the tooth are shaped and cleaned ready to be filled.
  5. Filling: The root canals that have been cleaned and shaped are filled and sealed to prevent further infection.
