Dental Filling vs Crown: What Is the Difference?

A filling and a crown can both repair a damaged tooth, but they are used in different situations. Learn the difference and when a dentist may recommend each option.

A dental filling and a dental crown can both help repair a damaged tooth, but they are not the same treatment. A filling is commonly used for smaller areas of decay or damage, while a crown may be recommended when a tooth needs more coverage and protection.

The right option depends on how much healthy tooth structure remains, where the tooth is, your bite, symptoms, and what your dentist finds during an examination.

What is a dental filling?

A dental filling is used to repair a tooth after decay, a small chip, or minor damage has been cleaned and prepared. The filling material is placed into the affected area to restore the tooth’s shape and function.

Fillings are often suitable when the damaged area is relatively small and the remaining tooth structure is strong enough to support normal biting and chewing.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a cover that fits over a prepared tooth. It is designed to protect and restore a tooth that has been weakened, cracked, heavily filled, worn down, or treated with root canal therapy.

Crowns are often considered when a filling alone may not provide enough strength or protection for the remaining tooth.

When might a filling be enough?

A filling may be suitable if:

  • The decay or damage is small to moderate
  • The tooth still has enough strong structure remaining
  • The tooth is not heavily cracked
  • The bite pressure on the tooth is manageable
  • The dentist believes the tooth can be restored predictably with a filling

When might a crown be recommended?

A crown may be recommended if:

  • The tooth is cracked or at risk of cracking further
  • The tooth has a large existing filling
  • A large part of the tooth has broken away
  • The tooth has had root canal treatment
  • The tooth needs stronger long-term protection

Is a crown always better than a filling?

No. A crown is not automatically better. A filling may be the more conservative and appropriate option when the tooth damage is smaller and the remaining tooth is strong enough.

A crown may be more suitable when the tooth needs greater coverage, protection or strength. Your dentist will explain why one option may be more appropriate than the other.

Can a filling turn into needing a crown later?

Sometimes, yes. If a tooth has a large filling, cracks over time, breaks again, or develops further decay, a crown may later be recommended to protect the remaining structure.

What about cost?

Costs can vary depending on the tooth, the material used, the complexity of treatment and whether other treatment is required first. Private health fund rebates may also vary depending on your policy.

At Lara Dental Prime, the dentist can assess the tooth and explain suitable options and expected costs before treatment proceeds.
